Dihydro-6-hydroxypenicillic acid is a butenolide/butyrolactone mycotoxin produced by various Penicillium, Aspergillus and other species. Dihydro-6-hydroxypenicillic acid has antiviral activity and has been patented as an antifouling agent for marine coatings. Dihydro-6-hydroxypenicillic acid inhibits influenza A/WSN/ 33 virus with an IC50 of 68 ± 0.7 µM. Dihydro-6-hydroxypenicillic acid is reported to be a nerve growth factor activator.
