Application Notes

Barbatic acid is a didepside first isolated by Stenhouse and Groves in 1880 from the lichen Usnea barbata. Barbatic acid is widely distributed across Usnea species, as well as other lichens including Cladonia and Cladia. Barbatic acid is potently active against the A549 human lung cancer cell line with IC50 of 1.8 ± 0.7 µM and is moderately active against HeLa, MCF and DU cancer cell lines. Barbatic acid demonstrates potent activity against the trematode Schistosoma mansoni after 60 minutes’ exposure.
