Application Notes

Arjunolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid first isolated from the tropical hardwood, Terminalia arjuna, and its structure resolved by researchers at University of Nottingham, UK. Subsequently, arjunolic acid was found in a diverse range of hardwood species. Arjunolic acid has antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, cardioprotectant and antitumor activity. Arjunolic acid stabilizes the ligand-binding domain of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) and increases its expression during cardiac hypertrophy. Arjunolic acid is potentially useful in the treatment of type 1 diabetes by preventing hyperglycemia-induced activation of MAPKs, PKC, NF-kB signaling cascades.
