Application Notes
6-[8(Z),11(Z),14-pentadecatrienyl]salicylic acid (anacardic acid 15:3) is the dominant triene member of a family of non-polar 6-pentadecylsalicyclic acids (anacardic acids) isolated from the cashew (Anacardium occidentale) shell and nut by Kubo and co-workers at University of California, Berkeley USA in 1986. Anacardic acids inhibit enzymes such as prostaglandin synthase, tyrosinase and lipoxygenase and are also known to exhibit antitumor, antimicrobial, and antiacne properties. More recently, anacardic acids have shown promise in inhibiting methane production in ruminants.
